Questions to ask any provider.

A license tells you a provider exists in the state's records. The visit tells you the rest. Here are the questions experienced mamas ask — bring this list with you.

  1. What are your ratios? How many children per adult, by age group — and what happens when a staff member calls in sick?
  2. Can I see your current license and most recent inspection report? A confident provider will show you both without blinking.
  3. Who exactly will be with my child? Names, training, how long they've been there, and how often staff turn over.
  4. Can I drop in unannounced? Open-door policies matter. If visits require advance notice, ask why.
  5. What does a typical day look like? Naps, meals, outside time, screens. Does the rhythm match your child's?
  6. How do you handle discipline and big feelings? Listen for an actual philosophy, not just "we redirect."
  7. What's your illness and medication policy? When are kids sent home, and who can give medicine?
  8. How will you communicate with me? Daily updates, photos, an app, a clipboard — and how fast do they reach you when something's wrong?
  9. What's your emergency plan? Allergies, injuries, evacuations, pickup authorization — who's trained in CPR and first aid?
  10. What are the real costs and terms? Registration fees, late-pickup fees, vacation weeks, notice periods. Get it in writing.

What a state license does — and doesn't — tell you.

A license is a useful starting point, not a finish line. Here's what's actually in the public record.

A license generally tells you…

  • The provider is registered with the state and subject to its rules.
  • The maximum number of children the state allows in their care.
  • That the state conducts inspections — and most states publish inspection and violation history online.
  • Which category of care it is (center, family child care home, preschool, etc.).

A license doesn't tell you…

  • Whether the care is warm, attentive, or right for your child.
  • Who will actually be in the room with your little one day to day.
  • How the provider handles a hard afternoon, a picky eater, or a kid who misses mama.
  • Anything about quality beyond minimum standards — the state checks floors and ratios, not hugs.

That's why the visit, the questions above, and your own gut matter most. Check your state's licensing website for inspection reports, and trust yourself — nobody knows your child like you do.
