9 Tips for Finding Your Purpose as a Mama

From the original Momni community blog — preserved from our archives so the Circle's earliest words live on. 💜

Purpose is defined as, “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.” As humans, we have an innate desire to find and fulfill our purpose. The Russian novelist, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, said, “The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” Some of us may find our purpose in our religion, our jobs, our communities, and especially our families.

Purpose isn’t a copy and paste outline for every person. It is something that is different, unique and constantly evolving for everyone of us, depending on what stage of life we are in. Whether you have small children, teenagers or grand babies, it is important to be in tune with yourself and find purpose in your daily life. Finding Purpose as a Mother When you become a mother, your purpose must grow to include them as well.

Passions that existed prior to motherhood may be added upon, priorities adjusted, and purpose expanded. You have new reasons to be joyful in your daily life. However, it can be easy to forget your purpose when you don’t get enough sleep, when you stop doing the things you once loved, or when you feel isolated in your own home. Children bring so much joy, but we can’t stop caring about the mama behind the child!

How do you know what your purpose is? You can only find out by actively pursuing this question, not with your mind, but with your heart. Find your purpose by trying new things, making new connections and actively pursuing passions. Make a conscious decision to find out what makes you happy!

Sarah Sandifer shares her experience with finding purpose on her blog . Momni Mama Tips Here are a few tips and tricks to help you find your purpose as a mother: 1 . Act! Many people want to feel fulfilled, but struggle to find exactly what their purpose is.

However, like most things, purpose usually doesn’t come until you act. Try an art class, go for a run, volunteer at the food bank. Just get out and try different things that you are interested in, but haven’t gotten around to doing! 2.

Enjoy your stage in life. It is so easy to go through life waiting to be at the next milestone or stage. And once we get there, we rarely take time to enjoy because we are usually anxious to just get to the next one! Mothers are no exception!

Realize that each stage of life only lasts for so long. Before you know it, your babies will be teenagers. So try to enjoy where you are and the different things that come with it! It doesn’t last forever!

3. Live with a thankful heart. It is natural for our brains to focus on the negative around us, but we can choose to think about the positive more! Many people have found success in increasing their attitude by keeping a gratitude journal!

When we are positive and grateful, life seems much better. You are more likely to be fulfilled and uplifted by the positive aspects of your life rather than weighed down by what you feel is missing. 4. Stop comparing.

In this age of social media, it can be really hard to not compare how we are doing to everything everyone else seems to be accomplishing. However, it is so important to remember that your purpose is yours , not your neighbor’s, not your mom’s or your best friend’s. Find what makes you happy and then tune out what everyone else is doing or saying about it! 5.

Find a hobby! Life is meant to be enjoyed, so find something that you love to do and make time to do it! While the amount of free time we have changes in every stage of life, there is usually always a spare 30 minutes here or there! Instead of filling this time with Netflix or Instagram, practice your hobby!

It will be much more rewarding to finally finish that painting you started than another round of The Office! 6. Connect with friends. We all need other mamas that we can rely on.

While it can be difficult to schedule this time, it can be done! Ask a friend if they would want to go on a walk before your kiddos wake up or see if your gals want to catch up over lunch. Even if that means taking your babies to the McDonald’s playhouse, you can still connect over a happy meal! Many people feel more fulfilled and purposeful when they have meaningful relationships, so take time to invest in your friends.

This will look different for each one of us, but it is so important! Whether you feel refreshed after meditating, yoga class, or a bubble bath, take a few minutes each day to relax and reconnect with yourself.

When we feel good about ourselves, we can then focus on helping others and fulfilling our purpose. Helpful tip: you may consider waking up an hour earlier to fit your self-care in! 8. Ask for help!

If you are feeling overwhelmed and struggling to find purpose, know that you are not alone! Every mom has must find a way to blend their purpose as a mother with their other passions and interests. It can be done! Find a mom you trust or has more experience and ask how she has been able to find meaning in motherhood and life!

9. Mother mission statement. Writing something down can be the catalyst to amazing things! Organizing your thoughts about what kind of person and mother you want to be will make it easier to work on your goals!
